What to do after a break-in at your spaza shop
The first 24 hours matter. Do these steps in order and your claim will go through faster.
1. Do not touch anything yet
Before you start cleaning up, take photos and video of everything: the door or window that was broken, the empty shelves, damaged stock on the floor, and any blood or tools left behind. The photos are the proof for both SAPS and your insurance.
2. Report it at the nearest SAPS station
Go in person the same day. Ask for a case number and the name of the officer taking the report. Every insurer needs a SAPS case number before they will pay out a theft claim. Without it, nothing moves.
3. Write down what was taken
Walk through the shop and list what is missing. Airtime, cigarettes, and cash are the most common. For each item write the quantity and the price you paid. Suppliers' invoices help a lot. If you keep a stock book, take a photo of the last entry.
4. Only then start cleaning
Once you have photos and a stock list, you can board up the door, sweep up broken glass, and secure the shop. Keep any broken locks or damaged equipment. The insurer may ask to see them.
5. Submit the claim
Send your insurer the SAPS case number, your photos, and the stock list. With Vuleka Insure this happens on WhatsApp. Most claims are decided within 48 hours and paid by EFT so you can restock.
6. Prevent the next one
- Move cash and airtime out of the shop every evening.
- Add a battery backup to your alarm so load-shedding doesn't disarm it.
- Install a second lock or steel gate on the entrance you use least.
- Get to know your neighbours. Most tips about repeat break-ins come from them.
